Our Story

The Red Kite Cafe was first opened in 2016 by owners Kedar and Carys, who sold the business to current owner Andrew in 2023. With a career in hospitality behind him, Andrew’s aim with the Red Kite Cafe was to take a local gem and elevate it into a destination cafe, without losing what made it special in the first place – the Abbeyhill community. You’ll often see Andrew working with his team behind the counter, so don’t hesitate to say hello!

At Red Kite, looking after our people is what’s important to us – that we can make virtually everything on our menu gluten free or vegan, without compromising the quality of the meal or increasing the cost to our customers. We are also proud to be a real Living Wage employer – all our staff get paid above minimum wage, and we support our staff in their Food Safety Qualifications and upskilling back of house.

Artist Residences

Abbeyhill is a center for creatives in Edinburgh, home to the annual Colony of Artists Fair in September. We exhibit local artists year-round; from Textiles to Illustration we are inspired to display some of the best of our community’s creatives. All of the art on display is for sale, so if you want to spice up your space and support local artists, come on in and have a chat with one of the team.

Want to exhibit your work? Flick us an email with your portfolio, we’d love to host you.
